Real Sociedad are on the verge of agreeing a new contract with exciting young midfielder Xabier Prieto.

The 21-year-old announced himself last term with a superb display in Sociedad's 4-1 demolition of Real Madrid on the final weekend of the season.

Prieto grabbed two goals in the game at El Santiago Bernabeu and his performance brought him to the attention of clubs both in Spain and abroad.

However, the right-sided midfielder is currently the lowest paid member of Sociedad's first-team squad, and his contract expires at the end of the season - although there is an option to extend it by a further two years.

The Basque outfit are keen to retain the services of the home-grown youngster and in recent weeks have reopened talks with his agent Miguel Angel Cermeno.

The two parties are said to be close to an agreement which would see Prieto's wages substantially increased, and the midfielder tied to the club until June 2008.
