Athletic Bilbao's Carlos Gurpegui will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his jaw bone.
The midfielder sustained a heavy blow to his head after a nasty-looking collision with his own goalkeeper, Inaki Lafuente, in the 1-1 draw with Mallorca at the weekend.
Gurpegui was immediately forced from the pitch and taken to hospital where he was kept under observation overnight.
Tests have now confirmed he has broken his jawbone and will need surgery to correct the problem.
He is unlikely to be back in full training for at least a month meaning he will not play again this term.
It proved a costly match for Athletic on the injury front with defender Luis Prieto also being forced off with a head complaint and winger Joseba Etxeberria picking up a muscular strain.
