Real Betis legend Alfonso may have to retire from the game after struggling to shake off a troublesome knee injury.
The 32-year-old has been unable to string together a good run of games so far this season, and reports in Spain suggest that he is ready to quit La Liga.
The former Barcelona striker has a damaged lateral ligament in his right knee, and could undergo surgery on the problem soon.
Betis club doctor Tomas Calero warned that going under the knife would at least end his input into the rest of this campaign.
"The subject is complicated," said Calero.
"If definitely decided the surgery will finish the rest of the season for him."
The Spanish press have openly speculated that if a full recuperation cannot be guaranteed then Alfonso may call an end to his career.
However the player, who has earned 38 caps for Spain, has so far failed to comment on the rumours.
