Mallorca have completed the signing of Portuguese defender Jose Nunes.

The Islanders agreed a ‚é¼2.5 million (£1.7 million) fee with Sporting Braga for the 28-year-old who has signed a three-and-a-half year deal.

Mallorca have been eager to bolster their rearguard with another central defender and finally settled on Nunes after seeing a deal for Sporting Lisbon's Beto flounder.

The imposing stopper has been with Braga for the past two seasons and has established himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Portuguese league.

Benfica were also reported to be keen on signing the player, but the lure of playing in Spain proved too strong for Nunes.

"I am happy to be here," he told reporters on Tuesday.

"The Braga president told me that there were various offers for me, but Mallorca were most interested in me.

"I am ambitious; the Spanish league is the best in the world and I want to demonstrate my qualities here."
