Muller heads home

Patrick Muller has joined Swiss league leaders Basel after leaving Mallorca.

Defender Patrick Muller has joined Swiss league leaders Basel after leaving Mallorca.

The 28-year-old cancelled his contract with The Islanders on Friday just six months after joining them as a free agent.

Following his departure from Mallorca he was linked with both Newcastle and former club Lyon, but Basel have moved quickly to secure his services.

Muller made only six appearances for The Islanders, and was keen to move on after not featuring at all since the arrival of Hector Cuper.

Basel have also announced the signing of midfielder Reto Zanni from Swiss rivals St Gallen.

Meanwhile, Mallorca have sealed the loan capture of Argentine striker Bernardo Romeo.

The hit-man is out of favour at Hamburg and has been allowed to move by boss Thomas Doll.

Romeo will stay with the Islanders until the end of the current campaign whereupon the Spaniards will have an option to make the deal permanent.
