Spanish side Osasuna have made a raid on a World Cup also ran by snapping up Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam on a free transfer from United Arab Emirates side Al Sharjah.
The 25-year-old was part of the Iran squad which failed to cut much ice in Germany.
Nekounam played in Iran's first two Group D games, but missed the draw with Angola due to suspension.
It would appear as if he did enough to impress the Osasuna paymasters in Germany as he was offered a two-year deal.
Nekounam, who was nominated for the Asian Player of the Year award, inked his contract on Wednesday and he will look to prove his quality in the new Primera campaign.
The midfielder is likely to be joined at the club by Hector Font.
The forward was informed he could leave Villarreal at the end of last season and Font is close to finalising a move to Osasuna.
"They have a good team and are a force in La Primera," Font told Marca.
