The 1-1 draw between Getafe and Villarreal was overshadowed by a horrible ankle injury to defender Mateo Musacchio on Sunday.

Villarreal said that Musacchio fractured his fibula and dislocated his left ankle when it completely doubled over while he was running in the 76th minute of the La Liga match.

The Argentina centre-back tumbled to the turf in agony as team doctors and the medical staff at Alfonso Perez Stadium rushed to attend to him before carrying him off the pitch on a stretcher.

Villarreal took the lead when Ikechuwku Uche converted a penalty in the 52nd that the striker had earned when he was fouled by Mehdi Lacen in the area.

But Getafe midfielder Diego Castro headed the hosts level in the 64th minute from Roberto Lago's cross.

Gonzalo Castro's stunning volley was not enough to earn Real Sociedad victory as Deportivo La Coruna came back twice to draw 2-2 in a promising debut by coach Victor Sanchez del Amo.

David Moyes' Real Sociedad were held at home to Deportivo in La Liga despite a stunning strike from Gonzalo 'Chory' Castro

Xabi Prieto gave Sociedad the lead from the spot after Jose Rodriguez blocked Sergio Canales' pass with his arm.

The visitors pulled level in the 40th after Ion Ansotegi handled the ball in the box, giving Lucas Perez the chance to finish off his own penalty after keeper Geronimo Rulli had blocked his initial spot-kick.

Castro's spectacular volley to lash in Canales' long cross restored Sociedad's advantage in the 57th, only for Jose Verdu to head in Deportivo's second goal with 12 minutes remaining.

Sergio Garcia's first-half goal gave Espanyol a 1-0 win they scarcely deserved over Athletic Bilbao.

The home side were comprehensively outplayed in this mid-table clash but, thanks to Garcia's 40th-minute effort they were able to steal the points and make it two victories in a row.

Goals from Enzo Roco and Mario Pasalic secured a 2-0 win for Elche over Cordoba, who had Borja Garcia sent off with nine minutes remaining.
