Benfica will not stand in the way of defender leaving

Joan Capdevila's agent says Benfica will not stand in the defender's way should he wish to leave the club in January. The Spain international left-back has been linked with a new challenge after failing to shine at the Estadio da Luz since joining the club from Villarreal in the summer. Capdevila's agent, Horacio Gazzoli, recently said he was already trying to find a new club for his client, and has now indicated that Benfica's only demand is that they come close to recouping their investment in the player.

Agreement

"I have an agreement with Benfica so that Capdevila can leave in January, in case an offer arrives," Gazzoli told Com Radio. "Benfica will not let him leave on the cheap, because they invested €2.8million (£2.4m) to sign him, plus his salary and they want to recover most of that figure." Espanyol have been suggested as a potential destination for Capdevila, and the 33-year-old's representative admitted that his client would relish the opportunity to return to the Catalan club. "He would be very happy to join Espanyol and that would be a great way to end his career," concluded Gazzoli.
