David Garcia has been ruled out for three months after picking up a knee injury in Espanyol's Uefa Cup encounter against Artmedia on Thursday.
The 25-year-old left back was substituted at half-time during the first round, first leg tie in Slovakia.
Tests have revealed that he damaged ligaments in his left knee and club doctor Miguel Cevera has ordered the player to take complete rest.
"It is a serious injury to the internal lateral ligament," Cevera explained.
Garcia will now miss the return match against Artmedia and the majority of the group games should Espanyol qualify.
Despite the major set-back the Catalan defender is philosophical about the injury and is prepared to bide his time before returning.
"You cannot do anything more except hope for a quick recovery," he said.
