Villarreal are reported to have joined the race for in-demand Espanyol defender Albert Lopo.

The 26-year-old will become a free agent in the summer having turned down the opportunity to sign a new contract with the Catalans.

A number of teams are chasing the stopper with Deportivo La Coruna having already opened talks with the player.

There is considerable interest from England also with the likes of Bolton, Manchester City and Blackburn all having been linked with the Spaniard.

His imminent free transfer status has now attracted Villarreal who are looking to build on another progressive campaign with a raft of new signings.

Lopo, who came through the youth ranks at Estadi Olimpico de Montjuic, has been a virtual ever-present for Espanyol since breaking into their first team some five seasons ago.
