ESPANYOL defender Daniel Jarque has signed a new contract which ties him to the Catalan club until 2008.

The youngster, 20, broke into the first team at El Estadio Montjuic last term making six league appearances.

The centre back was under contract with the Primera outfit until June 30 2004, but Espanyol were keen to re-sign the promising stopper on a long-term deal.

"Jarque is a home-grown player and we have renewed his contract for three years with an option for the club to extend it for two more," said Espanyol president Daniel Sanchez Llibre.

"Therefore, I hope that he will be with us for at least the next five years."

The player himself expressed his delight at the new deal and insisted he was happy to end his career with the Catalan outfit.

"With all the years I have spent at the club, I would be happy to end my career here," Jarque stated.
