With first choice keeper Jose Reina set to move to Liverpool, Villarreal have turned to Milan's Christian Abbiati in a bid to fill the void that will be left by his departure.
The Yellow Submarines' director general Jose Manuel Llaneza has travelled to Milan to meet his counterparts at the Rossoneri to hammer out a deal for the 27-year-old.
Abbiati is recognised as a competent shot-stopper although his progress at Giuseppe Meazza has been restricted by the sensational form of number one Dida.
Villarreal could be rivalled in their attempts to clinch a deal by Palermo, as boss Maurizio Zamparini has identified the need for another keeper should the Sicilian side clinch a Uefa Cup place.
A loan move for Abbiati has been slated in the Italian press, although the Spanish outfit are also targeting Malaga's Juan Calatayud and Racing Santander's Dudu Awat as they attempt to compensate for Reina's imminent departure.
