Diego's father has confirmed that the Atletico Madrid midfielder could be heading back to Santos.
The 29-year-old began his career with Santos, before heading to Europe where he has spent time with the likes of Porto, Juventus, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg.
Diego re-joined Atletico - where he had previously enjoyed a loan stint - in January on a short-term deal until the summer.
He has performed well under Diego Simeone - but he now seems keen on a move back to Brazil.
Diego's father Djair Ribas told Globo Esporte: "The interest [between Santos and Diego] is mutual, there is a big chance of him returning to Brazil. Other Brazilian clubs are interested, but he prefers Santos.
"We will wait until the last games to talk, Diego is under contract with Atletico Madrid and a lot of things can happen."
Santos sports director Andre Zanotta added: "It's a difficult negotiation.
"Diego is shining at the moment in a club that is a big success this year. We talked with his father, but there is nothing certain yet.
"It's a dream, we would really live to bring Diego here, but can't say he is close. He is a player we are always interested, no matter who runs the club. The club's doors will always be open because of the success he had here."
