Barcelona and Real Madrid both suffered shock Primera Liga defeats on the back of their controversial UEFA Champions League encounter.

With Saturday's domestic fixtures sandwiched in between the two-legged European semi-final, Barca and Real both made a raft of changes for their games against Real Sociedad and Real Zaragoza respectively.

However, the title contenders came unstuck as Barcelona let the lead slip to lose 2-1 away to Sociedad.

Thiago had given Barca a 29th minute lead before Gabriel Milito saw a goal ruled out for a marginal offside decision just past the midway point of the second half.

Sociedad capitalised on their good fortune to equalise on 71 minutes through Diego Ifran and Xavier Prieto's poor penalty then somehow found its way past Jose Pinto on 82 minutes to secure the win.

Earlier in the day, Real's slim title hopes appear to have been completely extinguished following a shock 3-2 home defeat at the hands of lowly Zaragoza.

Jose Mourinho freshened up his team after the 2-0 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, but the line-up failed to replicate last week's 6-3 victory at Valencia.

Angel Lafita made the breakthrough for Zaragoza four minutes before half-time and the lead was doubled on 55 minutes through Gabi's penalty after Ricardo Carvalho had fouled the opening goalscorer.

The hosts pulled a goal back on 62 minutes when Sergio Ramos, who will miss the return against Barca through suspension, headed home Mesut Ozil's corner.

However, Zaragoza restored their two-goal cushion on 77 minutes when Ikechukwu Uche played in Lafita to score from a one-on-one with Iker Casillas.

Karim Benzema did grab another goal for the home side with six minutes to go before Carvalho was shown a second yellow card before the final whistle.

Atletico Madrid moved up to fifth in the table after a 1-0 win over 10-man Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor.

Sergio Aguero scored the only goal of the game with 10 minutes left after Deportivo, who are only three points outside the relegation zone, had Alberto Lopo sent off for a second bookable offence just before the hour mark.
