Title-chasing Schalke are preparing to join Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in their bid to sign Wolfsburg winger Martin Petrov.

Schalke's general manager Rudi Assauer was present at the last Wolfsburg match against Arminia Bielefeld, in order to meet with the club's management to discuss the Bulgarian star's future.

Wolfsburg, however, are not keen to release the 25-year-old international and are hoping that the player's high price-tag will prevent a sale from taking place.

"We are not afraid of clubs like Atletico Madrid as they can not afford the player," Wolves manager Klaus Fuchs announced in Wolfsburg Nachrichten.

"Schalke can have Petrov only when we can see ‚é¼20 million in our account. Then we will see."

Despite Fuchs's determination to keep Petrov, Schalke look to be favourites for signing the winger as they are currently the richest and most active club transfer-wise in Germany.
