Paulo Futre, los rojiblancos' sporting director is believed to have turned to Titov after failing to lure Manuel Rui Costa to Spain.
Jesus Gil's side are obviously intent on making an impact in their centenary season, something seemingly put to one side by the Spanish media to allow Real to enjoy their time in the limelight.
At é¼8 million, Titov would be a major investment for Atletico, but they have watched him on a number of occasions in the past couple of months and been impressed.
Titov, at 26, is one of the stars of the Russian national team, for whom he has played 29 times. A midfielder with an eye for goal, Titov made his debut for Spartak when he was 19.
The main problem with the transfer appears to be that Atletico want him on loan with a view to buy, while Spartak want an outright transfer.
Atletico's other remaining option is Jorge of Las Palmas, although they face competition for him from Mallorca and Deportivo La Coruna.
