Che star heads for Islanders

Mallorca have swooped for Valencia midfielder Gonzalo de los Santos.

Mallorca have swooped for Valencia midfielder Gonzalo de los Santos.

The Uruguayan has moved on loan for the rest of the campaign and The Islanders have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

It is the second time that Mallorca boss Hector Cuper has signed the 28-year-old as he took him to Valencia from Malaga in July 2001 when he was in charge at the Mestalla.

De los Santos spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid and returned to Valencia last summer, but has failed to break into Claudio Ranieri's first-team plans this term.

Mallorca are also poised to complete the capture of Argentine striker Bernardo Romeo who is out-of-favour at Hamburg.

Hamburg boss Thomas Doll has admitted the player wants to leave, and is ready to let him depart with Mallorca almost certain to be his eventual destination.

"When a player is unhappy it makes no sense to try and keep hold of him," Doll stated.
