Valencia goalkeeper Andres Palop is confident of agreeing a new contract with the club in the near future.

The 30-year-old revealed he has begun talks with Che officials and expects a deal to be finalised next week.

Palop is second choice at the Mestalla behind Spain international Santiago Canizares but faces added competition after the arrival of French youngster Ludovic Butelle from Metz.

However, the former Villarreal shot-stopper is nevertheless looking to extend his stay with Valencia.

"The club have got in contact with my agent and there has already been an initial meeting," Palop stated.

"Negotiations have begun and we believe that everything could be closed by next week."

Palop's current deal expires at the end of this season and Valencia are keen to avoid the possibility of him leaving on a free next summer.
