Leonardo Ponzio has insisted his decision to swap Real Zaragoza for River Plate is not a backwards step.
The midfielder has finalised a return to his homeland of Argentina for a reported fee of é¼4million (£2.64million) after making 120 appearances in Spain.
Ponzio is hopeful that starring for River will help his cause for a place in Alfio Basile's international squad and the Santa Fe born star believes his new employers are every bit as prestigious as a Primera Liga club.
"I feel that River is more important than Zaragoza, the decision was exclusively about football," Ponzio told La Gaceta.
"I am soon going to turn 25 and the only thing I think of is playing. I believe that I have a long time ahead.
"This is not a step back, it is a firm step because I am very determined to succeed at River."
