Villarreal have completed the signing of Real Zaragoza star Cani and agreed a new contract with youngster Cesar Arzo.
Cani becomes the club's third signing of the close season, joining both Robert Pires and Nihat Kahveci at El Madrigal.
Zaragoza were desperate to retain their skipper, but could not persuade him to sign a new contract.
Although the two clubs were unable to agree a fee, Villarreal bypassed the issue by meeting the 24-year-old's release fee of é¼8.4 million (£5.5 million).
Having deposited that with the Spanish League (LFP), they were free to agree a five-year deal with midfielder who has now put pen to paper.
Meanwhile, Arzo has inked a contract that ties him to the club until 2010.
The 20-year-old is a midfielder by trade, but is equally adept in the centre of defence where he played in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal at Highbury to great effect.
