Hungary international Adam Szalai is determined to join Bundesliga outfit Mainz following an unhappy time at Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old striker initially joined Mainz on a six-month loan deal during the winter transfer window last season and made an instant impact.
The Budapest-born forward had already spent time playing at Stuttgart during a successful youth career and now the player seems set on returning to Germany.
Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel told Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung: "There is nothing finalised yet. Still I am of the opinion that we are about to clinch a transfer in the next couple of days. I hope it will be done by the end of the week."
According to the newspaper, Real Madrid are ready to sell the youngster for a transfer fee in the region of £500,000 as Szalai is contracted at the Bernabeu until June 2011.
The Hungarian is expected to team up with Mainz head coach Thomas Tuchel, who was aware of Szalai whilst he was youth coach at Stuttgart.
