Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg are hoping to take Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Mejia on loan when the transfer window reopens.

Erik Gerets' high-flying outfit are hoping to strengthen in January to enable a genuine title push.

The Wolves currently sit joint top with Schalke, but have lost three of their last five league outings - including a 4-0 thumping at Nurnberg on Saturday.

They have identified central defender Mejia as a potential recruit and have watched the player extensively in action and on video in recent weeks.

The Germans have opened talks with Real director of sport Emilio Butragueno about a deal, and are set to travel to the Spanish capital in the near future to try and broker a loan move, with the option of a permanent transfer.

Mejia, 22, came through the youth ranks at Real, but has failed to cement regular first-team action under Mariano Garcia Remon.

The player is prepared to leave the Santiago Bernabeu in search of regular football and is also reported to be interesting Real Betis.

However, Wolfsburg currently look to be in pole position to secure his services.
