Real Madrid's Walter Samuel will miss the opening game of the new Spanish season through injury.

The Argentine centre back strained ligaments in his right knee during Real's UEFA Champions League qualifying round victory over Wisla Krakow on Wednesday night.

It is believed that Samuel will be out of action for between two and three weeks meaning he will definitely miss Real's opening league fixture at Real Mallorca this weekend.

As a result, Madrid boss Jose Antonio Camacho has a selection headache in central defence for Sunday's game as his other summer recruit Jonathan Woodgate is also some way off full fitness.

Camacho looks likely to pair Francisco Pavon and Ivan Helguera in the heart of Real's back-line, with Guti set to come into midfield to partner David Beckham.
