Deportivo La Coruna put a huge dent in Real Madrid's title hopes with a 2-0 win at La Riazor on Saturday night.

Goals in each half from Diego Tristan and Juan Capdevila were enough to give Depor all three points to keep their own slim championship hopes alive with Zinedine Zidane seeing red for Real at the end of the first half.

Real started brightly and Esteban Cambiasso was unlucky to see a volley from Luis Figo's cross come back off the post after just five minutes.

Depor broke the deadlock on 29 minutes when Sergio burst past the Real defence and fired a shot which Iker Casillas blocked with his feet only for the ball to fall to Tristan who rammed the ball into the gaping net.

The visitors' hopes of getting back into the game suffered a major blow two minutes before the break with Zidane being sent off for a second bookable offence.

Depor came close to adding to their lead in the second half with Casillas twice denying Tristan.

Real coach Carlos Queiroz replaced David Beckham with Santiago Solari just past the hour which provoked an angry reaction from the England captain.

Depor did grab a crucial second on 69 minutes when Capdevila fired an unstoppable free kick from 30 yards past Casillas.

Atletico Madrid boosted their European hopes with a hard-fought 3-2 win over struggling Celta Vigo at Vicente Calderon.

The home side got off to a dream start with Nano firing them in front in the very first minute.

Spanish international Fernando Torres doubled the lead with a quick second four minutes later.

Former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic gave Celta hope by pulling a goal back just past the half hour, but Jose Garcia Calvo restored the two-goal cushion on 38 minutes.

Edu reduced the arrears for Celta again on 68 minutes, but Atletico held on for the win to move into sixth spot and leave Celta languishing second from bottom of the table.
