REAL MADRID let a two goal lead slip at home to AEK Athens and ended up playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw, with Steve McManaman getting a brace for the Spanish titans.

Elsewhere in Group C, Roma failed to break down a resolute Racing Genk side and could only manage a disappointing scoreless draw.

At Estadio Santiago Bernabeu it was the home side that showed first, despite a number of changes by Vicente Del Bosque, it was one of his substitutes that wanted to show the Real bosses what he could do and McManaman made it 1-0 in the 24th minute.

A superb piece of trickery by Brazilian striker Ronaldo presented the opportunity for the second, which McManaman again converted.

However, in the second half, Real took their foot off the pedal and AEK were in no mood to be embarrassed.

With a quarter of an hour to go Kostas Katsouranis got a goal back for the Greeks and Walter Centeno popped up with the equaliser with five minutes left as AEK earned a surprise draw.

In Rome, the calls for Fabio Capello's head are sure to be raised following their 0-0 draw with Racing Genk.

The Belgians set their stall out from the start and it is to their credit that they held out against a Roma side that lacked ideas at times.
