Real Madrid moved to within two points of Primera Liga leaders Getafe after a 4-0 thrashing of bottom club Mallorca.

In front of a packed Santiago Bernabeu crowd - which included Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney - Real put on a Brazilian goal-fest against the struggling Islanders.

It took 33 minutes for Ronaldo to break the deadlock for Real with a fine strike before fellow countryman Roberto Carlos made it two before the break after volleying home David Beckham's corner.

Los Merengues' left back scored his second on 65 minutes with a blistering free kick before Mallorca had Sergio Ballesteros sent off for a second bookable offence after clashing with Beckham.

The home side concluded their win when Julio Baptista knocked home a Beckham free kick from close range to make it four with less than a quarter hour remaining.

The result will be of particular satisfaction to Wanderley Luxemburgo's side, with champions Barcelona having scraped a 2-2 draw with Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Celta Vigo missed the chance to leapfrog Getafe after a 1-1 draw at Cadiz.

Andres Fleurquin gave Cadiz the lead before the quarter hour mark but Celta earned a point when Fernando Baiano levelled matters 10 minutes later.

They stay a point behind the Madrid-based club, who kept their remarkable start to the new season going with victory over Valencia on Saturday.

An early goal from Inaki Munoz gave Osasuna a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor.

Villarreal took advantage of the extra man to defeat struggling Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at El Madrigal.

The Basque club had taken the lead on 19 minutes when Joseba Etxeberria found the scoresheet but the match turned just before the break.

Javier Casas was sent off for a deliberate handball and a minute later, Juan Roman Riquelme restored parity for The Yellow Submarines.

Jose Mari gave Villarreal the lead on the hour mark before Marcos Senna rounded out the scoring for the home side.

A Fernando Torres penalty (65) and a strike from Mateja Kezman (74) gave Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Malaga in Sunday's late match on the Costa Del Sol.

Alaves recorded their first win of the season with a fine 2-1 success at Racing Santander.

Wesley gave the Basque visitors a half time lead before Juanjo equalised with 11 minutes left for Racing.

Substitute Santiago Carpintero proved the hero for Alaves with a last-minute strike to claim the points.

Espanyol were denied victory in Andalucia after Fredson's early strike proved not enough against Sevilla.

The Barcelona-based club lost two points after Moises Hurtado put into his own net for a 1-1 draw.

Real Sociedad got a second half strike from Darko Kovacevic to earn a 1-1 home draw with Real Betis.

The Seville outfit took a half-time lead through Juanito before Serbia & Montenegro international Kovacevic pulled a goal back for the San Sebastian club just after the break.
