A single goal from Brazilian star Roberto Carlos handed Real Madrid a 1-0 victory over Malaga.
Real closed the gap to leaders and rivals Barcelona with a hard fought victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Roberto Carlos grabbed the only goal of the game in the 61st minute to delight the home fans.
Valencia moved back into the top five in Spain with a 3-1 win against Getafe.
Goals from Rufete, Italian Marco Di Vaio and a Mista penalty gave Antonio Lopez's men the win - with Mariano Pernia grabbing a consolation for the visitors.
Athletic Bilbao proved too strong for Levante - picking up a 3-1 victory at the San Mames.
Fernando Llorente's brace had put the hosts in control, but Juanma got Levante back in the game before Ismael Urzaiz made things safe late on.
Racing Santander twice came from behind to pick up a 3-2 win at Numancia.
Mario Regueiro had cancelled out Pablo Sanz's opener for the hosts before Francisco Tarantino put Numancia ahead for the second time.
However, David Aganzo levelled for the visitors before Javier Arizmendi sealed the points.
Julio Baptista's penalty was enough to give Sevilla a 1-0 win at struggling Mallorca.
Finally, Real Zaragoza picked up a 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid in Sunday's late kick-off.
