Espanyol missed the chance to move into second place in the table after being held to a disappointing goalless draw at bottom club Numancia.
Sevilla consolidated their place in fifth spot with a 2-1 win over Real Betis.
The home side got off to a flying start with Daniel Alves firing Sevilla in front after just three minutes.
