Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is set to miss Spain's friendly against Ecuador after injuring his right ankle during a pre-season game against a Malaysia XI.
The former Arsenal man, who has been the subject of bids from Manchester United this summer, was brought off in the 82nd minute of Saturday's game.
Following scans on the ankle, Barca revealed that Fabregas had "sprained an external lateral ligament in his right ankle."
Fabregas had been included in Vicente del Bosque's Spain squad for Wednesday's international friendly, which the coach described as important preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Spain play Finland in a Group I match on 6 September.
Lionel Messi missed Barca's 3-1 win in Kuala Lumpur due to a thigh strain but his absence was thought to be merely a precaution.
Fabregas had scored the opener and set up further goals for Neymar and Gerard Pique before he was substituted as Barca cruised to victory in their final pre-season contest.
