Eric Abidal has admitted that he prefers to be used as a central defender, despite playing the majority of his career at left-back.
The versatile defender can play at full-back or at centre-half, and he got the nod to play alongside Philippe Mexes at the heart of France's defence in the friendly against Slovakia.
France face Italy on Saturday and Abidal's services in the middle could be called on again as manager Raymond Domenech is without duo William Gallas and Lilian Thuram.
"Central defender is the position that suits me the best - considering my quality of having good pace," Abidal told L'Equipe
"I was fine in Slovakia, and was happy to play alongside Mexes. We found a good partnership."
Abidal though, is happy to be utilised in whichever position Domenech sees fit.
"However against Italy we should not change everything. There is a defence already set. Maybe I should play on the left.
"It will be up to the coach to make the decision."
