Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard looks set to rest a number of players for the game against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Dutchman insists leaving out both Xavi and Leo Messi is not a sign of disrespect towards the Germans.

Barca have already qualified for the next round and will be keen to preserve their players' fitness for the subsequent rounds and also for La Liga.

The Catalan side overwhelmed rivals Real Madrid 3-0 at the weekend and Rijkaard looks set to give those that did not play at the Bernabeu a run out.

"Some of the players did not participate on Saturday and they find that hard, but they will have to be mentally strong."

"I spoke to some of them and explained my reasons with sincerity.

"The game against Real Madrid is history now. We now have another game and a new chance for some players who have not had many opportunities this season.

"We have a strong squad and all the players deserve to play and that makes it difficult to choose."

Barca's opponents on Tuesday also recorded a good victory at the weekend, thrashing Wolfsburg 6-1 and Rijkaard is wary of the threat that the Germans pose.

"You cannot underestimate any team in Europe because the level is always very high.

"They have had some good results against Spanish teams in the past and in their last league game they scored six goals.
