Barcelona cut the gap between themselves and Osasuna at the top of La Liga to two points with a 3-1 victory over Getafe, whilst Real Madrid remain a further point off the pace thanks to their victory over Real Zaragoza.

Frank Rijkaard's side were dominant in their away win and set the tone in just the first minute when Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o notched his tenth league goal of the season after Silvinho capitalised on some loose passing from Getafe.

However it took until 62 minutes for Los Cules to double their lead as Eto'o turned provider to shrug aside suspicions of offside and feed the unmarked Ludovic Giuly.

Midfielder Thiago Motta wrapped up the scoring for Barca with a superb free-kick ten minutes later, but Mariano Pernia added a sensational consolation for Getafe in the dying minutes as he scored with a scorching volley that left Victor Valdes with no chance.

Real Madrid moved to third in La Liga as they overcame Real Zaragoza 1-0 thanks to two penalty decisions.

Los Merengues, shorn of English stopper Jonathan Woodgate in the early stages, had wonderkid Robinho to thank as he won both spot kicks - although the Brazilian was guilty of missing the first on 75 minutes.

After being pulled down in the box by Delio Toledo the former Santos star dusted himself down and was denied by a tremendous save from former Madrid man Cesar.

However just two minutes later Robinho was again fouled, this time by a lunge from Leo Ponzio, and responsibilities were handed over to compatriot Roberto Carlos who made no mistake with an emphatic effort.

Celta Vigo maintained their unlikely challenge in La Liga with a 2-1 win over Alaves that took them to fourth in Spain, despite a missed penalty from Javi Guerrero.

The Galicians took the lead through Nestor Cannobio (27) and Jonathan (65) before Martin Astudillo (67) notched a consolation strike for the visitors.

Real Betis could not build on their midweek defeat of Chelsea as they failed to leapfrog Racing Santander in a 1-1 draw.

The Seville outfit had taken the lead through the hero against The Blues, Dani, on 22 minutes although Santander hit back with quarter of an hour to go through substitute Antonito.

Rivals Sevilla were also held to a stalemate as they failed to break the deadlock against Atletico Madrid.

A further draw in La Liga witnessed Malaga hold Deportivo 1-1 at Estadio La Rosaleda.

The visitors stay in eighth position after rescuing a point when Juan Carlos Valeron (75) cancelled out Nacho's effort on 52 minutes.

Real Mallorca edged away from the relegation zone as they fought back to claim a 2-1 victory over Cadiz, despite going down to ten men in the first half.

Cadiz took the lead after just eight minutes through Fernando Enrique before Victor Casadesus equalised for Mallorca before the half hour.

The visitor's chances received a blow on 37 minutes when Guillermo Pereyra was dismissed for two bookable offences but a late strike from Juan Arango handed them all three points.
