Real Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after a 3-0 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid.

The derby contest at the Vicente Calderon was settled in the early stages, as Antonio Lopez's foul on Raul in the Atletico box gave Los Merengues a penalty.

Lopez was then harshly sent off by referee Benardino Gonzalez Vasquez for his indiscretion before Ronaldo stepped up to slot the spot kick home for a 1-0 half time lead.

Wanderley Luxemburgo's side always looked in control and deservedly doubled their lead on the hour mark when Ronaldo coolly finished Guti's forward pass past Atletico goalkeeper Leo Franco.

Some excellent second half saves from Iker Casillas kept Atletico at bay and Real wrapped up the points in injury time with a third goal, as Atletico defender Luis Perea knocked Robinho's pass to Ronaldo into his own net.

The one worry for the Spanish giants will be the injury sustained by Ronaldo following Perea's challenge on him in the move for the third goal.

Champions Barcelona are five points adrift of the new leaders after being held to a 3-3 draw at Deportivo La Coruna.

Juan Valeron gave Depor the lead after nine minutes but Samuel Eto'o finished a fine move to level matters five minutes before the break.

Ronaldinho then gave the Catalans the lead with a fine strike on the stroke of half time and the Brazilian star doubled his tally with a penalty six minutes after the restart following Jose Molina's challenge on Deco in the Depor box.

Barca, however, were not able to hold on to their advantage, as Pedro Munitis' fine curling effort pulled the Galicians to within a goal on 73 minutes.

Depor earned a point when Sebastian Taborda's shot went off the post and Ruben was on hand to slot home on the rebound - much to the delight of the Riazor crowd.

Villarreal's struggles in La Primera continue after they were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Alaves.

Roger gave Villarreal the lead after four minutes but the Basque club earned a point when Nene struck nine minutes later.
