La Liga round-up

Valencia are top of La Liga after demolishing Deportivo La Coruna 5-1.

Valencia have gone top of La Liga after a 5-1 demolition of struggling Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor.

The Spanish champions were too much for Javier Irureta's side, as the Che ran out to a 4-0 lead by the break.

The Italian duo of Bernardo Corradi and Marco Di Vaio found the scoresheet for the visitors in the opening half while Vicente (pictured) and Rufete added goals by half time.

Ruben Baraja made it five four minutes after the break before beleaguered Depor got a consolation from Uruguayan Walter Pandiani, but it was an embarrassing night for the home side.

Getafe recorded their first win since winning promotion to the Primera Liga by bringing Saturday's conquerers of Real Madrid in Espanyol back down to earth with a 1-0 victory.

A Hugo Ibarra own-goal just before the quarter hour mark settled the contest at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Another promoted side that had a good evening was Levante, who defeated Atletico Madrid 1-0 with an Alberto Rivera penalty in the first half.

The same could not be said for fellow promoted club Numancia, as Malaga thrashed them 4-1 at La Rosaleda.

Three goals in the first 20 minutes from Miguel Angel, Costa Rican Paulo Wanchope and Marcio Amoroso made the contest safe for the Costa Del Sol club.

Numancia then had Patricio Graff sent off five minutes before the break to make matters worse for the visitors.

Juan Ochoa pulled one back in the second half for Numancia before Jose Luque restored Malaga's three-goal lead in the dying stages.

Villarreal and Sevilla played out a goalless draw, as did Albacete and Mallorca on Wednesday evening.

Real Betis defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 with goals from Juanito and Fernando - Ismael Urzaiz replied for the Basque club.

Finally, Mario Regueiro gave Racing Santander a 1-0 away win at struggling Real Sociedad, as the Basque side have yet to record a victory after their first four matches of this season.

The visitors even played the second half with ten men, as Alessandro Pierini was sent off just before the break for a second bookable offence.
