Valencia 2 Bordeaux 1 (Agg:4-2)

Valencia sealed a place in the Uefa Cup semi-finals, and a mouthwatering tie with Liga rivals Villarreal, with a 2-1 victory over Bordeaux - a repeat of the scoreline in the first leg.

The Mestalla favourites eased through 4-2 on aggregate and generally controlled proceedings from the first whistle, although the visitors can be proud of their efforts.

Xisco Munez almost managed to convert an inviting cross from Rufete and Fabian Canobbio was unlucky in a cagey first half that saw keepers Santiago Canizares and Ulrich Rame rarely tested.

Defender Mauricio Pellegrino broke the deadlock six minutes after the interval when his header found its way past Rame after Rufete had created the opportunity with an accurate corner.

Nine minutes later and the tie was effectively all over. La Mestalla celebrated a deserved goal for the impressive Rufete, who profited from Angulo's cross during a slick break to make it 2-0 on the night and 4-1 overall.

To their credit, Les Girondins pulled a goal back when Eduardo Costa volleyed a Francia free kick past Canizares with 18 minutes remaining.

Xisco almost added a late third for the home side and Canizares denied Marc Planus at the other end, but the scoreline remained 2-1 to send Valencia through to their date with destiny against Villarreal, the surprise package of this season's tournament.
