Valencia missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table as they were held to a goalless draw at Valladolid.

They now hold a two-point advantage over second-placed Real Madrid who play on Sunday.

Edgar Davids made his debut for Barcelona  but was unable to stop Athletic Bilbao grabbing a point at Camp Nou.

Both goals came in the second half with Barca going in front through substitute Patrick Kluivert's looping header only for Carlos Gurpegi to equalise with five minutes left.

The Catalan side were indebted to goalkeeper Albert Jorquera who made a number of crucial saves in the game after being preferred to Turkish international Rustu Recber.

The result leaves Barcelona dow in seventh place and still three points off fourth spot and the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Celta Vigo let slip a two-goal advantage away at bottom club Murcia.

Peter Luccin gave the visitors an early lead on six minutes and former Aston Villa man Savo Milosevic made it two on the stroke of half-time.

However they could not hold on for the win as Jesus pulled one back on 68 and David Karanka squared things up 11 minutes from time.

Celta did not help themselves as they were forced to play the last half hour with only ten men after Luccin was dismissed for a second yellow card offence.
