After signing his new contract at the club, Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes will earn more than team-mate Rustu Recber from the beginning of next season.

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal that ties him to the club until 2008, and the terms of the new contract will take effect from July 1.

Valdes, a Barca youth product, has kept Turkish international Rustu out of the Catalans' first team this term, much to the frustration of the Turk.

The former Fenerbahce custodian allegedly agreed to sign for Barca on a relatively low wage after being promised the number one jersey, and incentives for each game played.

However, coach Frank Rijkaard opted to start the season with Valdes - after fears over Rustu being able to communicate with his backline given his inability to speak Spanish - and has stuck with the youngster ever since.

Rustu has made clear his dissatisfaction at his current predicament, and fears his lack of action could jeopardise his spot in the Turkey national team.

The 30-year-old is likely to be even less happy if Valdes retains his first-team spot and earns more than him, and could well consider moving on when the transfer window reopens if he still finds himself playing second fiddle.
