ITALIAN coach Giovanni Trapattoni has announced his 20-man squad for the friendly match with Japan on November 7, with the only surprise being the call-up of Atalanta skipper Cristiano Doni.

There was speculation in Italy that Trapattoni would welcome into the squad Chievo midfielder Christian Manfredini - who has shone in his side's shock start to the season - and turned down a call from his nation of birth Ivory Coast, to invite an Azzuri approach.

Roberto Baggio, 'the divine ponytail', was touted for a return to the side after his superb start to the season but an injury ruled him out of contention and saved Trapattoni making what would have been a difficult decision on the Brescia ace.

The squad is as follows:

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Francesco Toldo (Internazionale)

Defenders: Valerio Bertotto (Udinese), Fabio Cannavaro (Parma), Mark Iuliano (Juventus), Marco Materazzi (Internazionale), Alessandro Nesta (Lazio)

Midfielders: Francesco Coco (Barcelona), Luigi Di Biagio (Internazionale), Angelo Di Livio (Fiorentina), Cristiano Doni (Atalanta), Stefano Fiore (Lazio), Gennaro Gattuso (Milan), Giuseppe Pancaro (Lazio), Damiano Tommasi (Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (Juventus)

Attackers: Francesco Totti (Roma), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Marco Delvecchio (Roma), Filippo Inzaghi (Milan)
