The Portuguese national team captain, who denied taking any illegal substances, tested positive for nandrolone following a game with Fiorentina last January.
The 31-year-old stopper had been suspended on April 27, when results of second tests on his urine samples were completed, pending a decision by the disciplinary commission.
The commission also handed a ten-month suspension, for use of banned drugs, on Belgian goalkeeper Jean Francois Gillet, who played with Bari last season.
The highly-rated keeper, who suffered relegation to Serie B with Bari last term, had been suspended from April 19.
The commission also suspended Nicola Caccia and Stefano Sacchetti, of newly-promoted Serie A outfit Piacenza, for eight and ten months respectively.
These four players follow Dutch duo Edgar Davids and Frank de Boer in being banned from playing for testing positive for nandrolone.
All parties claim innocence in their cases and they can appeal the suspension.
