Sevilla have confirmed that midfielder Tiberio Guarente has undergone a successful knee operation.
The 25-year-old Italian was due for surgery on Thursday after suffering ligament and cartilage damage in his right knee.
And although the operation went well, he is still set to be sidelined for at least six months, as initially thought.
The first phase of his rehabilitation is expected to see slow progress before he rejoins the squad for full training around April.
Guarente joined Sevilla on a five-year deal from Atalanta in the summer and after just seven appearances for his new club he is expected to miss most of the season.
"This is bad news for the club because we had great confidence in the player," said Sevilla's sporting director Ramon Gonzalez Monchi.
