Villarreal have announced the signing of Ecuador international Jefferson Montero.

In March, the 19-year-old midfielder claimed he was poised to join Primera Division champions Real Madrid.

However, Manuel Pellegrini's Yellow Submarines revealed the capture of Montero's signature on their official website on Monday.

A statement read: "He is one of the big hopes of Ecuadorean football."

Montero has put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal with Villarreal, who already boast a number of South American-born players in their squad.

The teenager has previously played for Ecuadorian sides Club Sport Emelec and Independiente Jose Teran, and Mexican club Dorados de Sinaloa.
