Versatile Brazilian leaves Barca for Villarreal

Villarreal have completed the signing of Edmilson on a free transfer from Barcelona. The Yellow Submarines secured a second-place finish in the Primera Liga during the 2007/08 season and are looking to reinforce ahead of a UEFA Champions League campaign next year. Edmilson, who is equally at home in defence or midfield, spent four years at Camp Nou and helped the Catalan giants to two league titles and the 2006 Champions League. His championship pedigree extends beyond his time in Spain, however, as he also picked up three Ligue 1 titles during his time at Lyon. He is a Brazilian international with over 40 caps for his country and tasted World Cup glory in 2002 as part of Luiz Felipe Scolari's successful squad. With Barca unwilling to offer him a contract extension he had attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle. However, he has chosen to remain in Spain and has penned a two-year deal at El Madrigal. He is expected to be officially presented to the club's supporters on Monday.
