Espanyol reject exit talks

Spaniards keen to keep hold of reported Tottenham targets

Espanyol insist they have no intention of allowing either Daniel Jarque or Albert Riera to leave the club, amid talk of interest from Tottenham. New Spurs chief Juande Ramos is not expected to make wholesale changes to his playing squad in the January transfer window but their lowly position could still see a couple of White Hart Lane arrivals. Riera is well known on English shores having previously played on-loan at Manchester City, where he failed to convince then boss Stuart Pearce he was worth a permanent deal. His form in the past two seasons has though seen his stock rise considerably, with Spain having rewarded the wide man with international honours. Jarque too has also seen his stature, and price tag, grow over the past year but Espanyol president Daniel Sanchez Llibre insists he has no intention of selling; at least not on the cheap.

Market value

"Espanyol are not interested in the sale of important players like Jarque and Riera. "If a club is interested it is only possible if they pay the market value." Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde has echoed the words of his president, adding: "I do not know if the rumours are true or not but these questions will affect the work of the players. "I have demanded to the club that they reject the sale of Riera or Jarque because this pair are crucial to the team and our aspirations."
