Atletico Madrid have confirmed Quique Sanchez Flores as their new boss following the sacking of Abel Resino on Friday.
The Spanish giants moved swiftly to secure a replacement and after it emerged first-choice Michael Laudrup was not keen on the job, Atletico approached former Benfica boss Flores.
Resino was dismissed on Friday after a string of poor results which saw just one win in their previous ten games, with Wednesday night's 4-0 thumping at Chelsea his last in charge.
Flores, a Spanish native who has coached both Valencia and Getafe, will take charge until at least the end of the season with a view to an extension depending on results.
However, assistant coach Santi Denia will take charge of the team for Saturday's home game against Mallorca.
Atletico lie bottom of UEFA Champions League Group D and former boss Resino, who was only appointed in February to replace Javier Aguirre, insists he did all he could to turn the club's fortunes around.
He said: "I gave it everything I have, but football is capricious and we are not getting the results we want. However, I am leaving with a clear conscience because I tried."
