METZ are aiming to cancel Eric Hassli's contract to fund their swoop for Troyes defender Mehdi Meniri.

Young striker Hassli has failed to build on his promise for Metz and coach Jean Fernandez is keen to offload the Frenchman.

The 22-year-old spent a brief loan spell at Southampton in the spring of 2002 but did not make an appearance for the Premiership outfit and returned to Metz.

His subsequent performances have not improved and Fernandez has confirmed the club are trying to reach an agreement to rescind Hassli's contract.

Metz need to shed Hassli from their squad to ensure they will be able to sign Algerian stopper Meniri (pictured), who has been put on the transfer list by Troyes.

Meniri recently underwent trials at Bolton Wanderers and Toulouse without earning a deal but could be set for a return to Le Championnat with Metz.

The 26-year-old is seeking to thrash out an accord with Troyes to allow him to leave on a free transfer, with Metz using their joker to bring Meniri to the club.

"There are still some problems to settle but it should be okay," said Meniri.

"I still have one year on my contract with Troyes but the club should release me."
