Etienne Didot: Scored the only goal of the game as Toulouse beat Rennes

Lille had to settle for a goalless stalemate against Valenciennes, while Toulouse edged out Rennes and Nice were held by Sochaux.

Lille were unable to make up much ground on the Ligue 1 leaders after escaping with a point at lowly Valenciennes.

The result sees the defending champions move to third in the table, above Lyon on goal difference, but they lie six points adrift of pacesetters Paris St Germain.

Valenciennes remain in the relegation zone despite an enterprising display which saw them hit the woodwork three times.

A solitary goal from Etienne Didot guided Toulouse to victory over Rennes as they overcame playing with 10 men for 35 minutes to move up to fifth in Ligue 1.

Didot struck in the 26th minute with a deflected free-kick before the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Antoine Devaux was sent off after 55 minutes following a challenge on Kevin Theopile-Catherine.

Jonathan Pitroipa and Julien Feret had late shots for Rennes but Toulouse held on to leapfrog their visitors.

Nice will feel unfortunate not to have claimed all three points after a 1-1 draw with Sochaux.

Nice created the better of the chances during the match, even after midfielder David Hellebuyck was shown a straight red card in the 62nd minute, but Sochaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert proved a tough man to get past.

He was beaten only once, by Eric Mouloungui in the 30th minute, but Nice only held that lead for five minutes before Ryad Boudebouz drew Sochaux level from the penalty spot - a goal that would end up earning his side a point.

The result leaves Nice in the bottom five of the Ligue 1 standings on 11 points, three behind mid-table Sochaux.
