Ligue 1: Blaise Matuidi claims PSG were 'consumed by fear' against Monaco

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi claimed his side were lacking in character and "consumed by fear" after the reigning Ligue 1 champions yet again failed to hold on to a lead.

PSG had looked set to record a much-needed win on Sunday after taking a 71st-minute lead against Monaco through Lucas Moura, but last year's runners-up snatched a point at the Parc des Princes when substitute Anthony Martial levelled deep in stoppage time.

That was PSG's sixth draw in nine Ligue 1 matches this season and the fourth time they had failed to hold on to a lead.

It also left them seven points adrift of leaders Marseille and Matuidi admits they have some issues that need sorting out quickly.

He was quoted as saying in L'Equipe: "It's happened again. It's a bad habit - it's got to stop.

"We were too pensive tonight and I am sure that's why we conceded that goal.

"When you allow yourself to be consumed by fear, it won't show you any mercy, and so that's what happens.

"We lacked, noticeably at the end, personality and character. We have to put a stop to that quickly or we'll lose more points."

PSG had gone into the match buoyed by their 3-2 Champions League win over previously-unbeaten Barcelona in midweek, but Matuidi agreed it was a significant setback to have dropped yet more points in the league.

The France international said: "Yes, but if we hadn't had to play those last two minutes, we would be talking about a repeat of what happened (against Barca).

"It's all about the small details.

"On the whole it was a tough game. We worked hard but couldn't hold onto the result, and that's what matters."

PSG, who were again without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, captain Thiago Silva and forward Ezequiel Lavezzi against Monaco, now have to wait until after the international break for a chance to get their title defence back on track, with their next match seeing them travel to lowly Lens on Friday, October 17.

With Marseille and second-placed Bordeaux not in action until two days later, PSG will have the chance to put some pressure on the leading pair, but Matuidi admits to do that they will need to return with a different mindset.

He added: "Everybody wants to be up there, but to be up there we have to do whatever is necessary. If we're not up there today, it's because we haven't done that.

"I hope we all come back with a winning mindset after these next 15 days because, right now in the championship, we don't have one.

"I also hope we get back the world-class players we are missing and who make us a great team."
