St Etienne survived a major scare against minnows Villefranche before securing a spot in the last 16 of the Coupe de France on penalties.
The CFA Group B side were playing Ligue 1 opposition for the first time in their history and twice equalised after going behind to the visitors.
Gonzalo Bergessio (10) and Bakary Sako (85) scored for St Etienne with Bruno Barreto grabbing Villefranche's first and Bernard Lopez forcing extra-time in the 90th minute.
But their nerve failed them in the shootout as only Lopez scored from the spot as they went down 3-1.
Sochaux had a simpler time in booking their place in the next round, easing past Le Mans 3-0.
Ryad Boudebouz opened the scoring with a first-half penalty before an Ideye Brown double sealed it.
