Auxerre have been dealt a huge blow with the news that midfielder Lionel Mathis has been ruled out of action for up to five months.

The 25-year-old injured his ankle as he collided with goalkeeper Ulrich Rame in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Bordeaux.

After leaving the pitch Mathis underwent surgery and had to be treated for both a broken fibula and a damaged ligament.

As a result of the serious injury Mathis is now expected to be out of action for between three and five months, meaning he could miss most of the rest of the season.

In immediate terms, Mathis' injury means he will be a frustrated onlooker when Auxerre face Rangers in the Uefa Cup on November 23.

After one game in Group A, the French side are currently without a point after losing to Maccabi Haifa and Mathis' injury is a cruel blow to their hopes of escaping the group stages.
