Ajax secured a first leg advantage with a 1-0 success over Auxerre.
Brazilian defender Maxwell struck a wonderful goal ten minutes before the interval to gave the Dutch giants the advantage.
Ajax had very much been on top in the opening period and deserved their lead.
However, Auxerre came out battling in the second half and pushed Ajax hard - but there was no way through for Guy Roux's side.
The duo now meet in France next week for the return leg, with the winners playing either Basel or Lille.
